The humble energy audit and how it can lead to annual savings of £360k

As some of you might be aware, the Government recently published for consultation their BEIS industrial strategy which has a strong emphasis on looking at ways to reduce energy costs for businesses and in particular how cost savings from energy efficiency can be best realised and supported.

Although I’m sure we all have our own views on how the Government is addressing these issues, fundamental “no brainer” steps and measures are in our own gift to progress.

Turning uncertainties into real results for Local Authorities

Brexit, budget cuts and the challenge of doing more for less all contribute to the ever growing uncertainties that Local Authorities face. If we’re not careful though, these uncertainties can cause a paralysis that ultimately leads to nothing getting done, little service improvement and no room for innovation.

But if you take a fresh approach to managing and optimising your energy and estate assets, things are not as impossible as they first appear.

London centre demands world-class energy management

The London Aquatics Centre is no ordinary swimming pool. Originally built for the London Olympics in 2012, it has three pools and space for thousands of spectators. The venue’s design quality is stunning and it has a building management system to match.

Our Energy Solutions team (formerly BAS/ESG) worked closely with the main contractor to implement an automatic, energy-saving system that controls all heating, cooling and ventilation. It also monitors critical plant and energy usage within a simple, integrated web interface that allows full access to the complete system.

We’ve already saved Glasgow City Council almost £1 million.

Glasgow City Council’s ICT network stretches over more than 700 buildings. In its schools alone, the council operates over 19,000 ICT devices. Since installation in April 2014, our Energy ICT solution has saved the council more than £30,000 a month, and it will reach its £1m savings milestone within 3 years of deployment.

It doesn’t stop there, either. The system continues to manage the efficiency of the devices on the network, saving the council money each and every month.

Cool ideas mean big savings

Although The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead was purpose-built in 2009, just a few years after it opened, its management team chose to fund upgrades through a bespoke energy performance contract.

With electricity consumption and cost savings guaranteed, the solution required exceptional energy saving expertise from the start.

Maintaining a great indoor skiing experience all year round is an energy intensive business. Building a clear picture of how energy was being used required a ‘deep dive’ into the centre’s existing energy data. That was then followed by an intensive site audit to gain a complete understanding of the building’s design and construction – particularly its lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration plant.
